Indeed, to describe the texture of the “tawny light,” Hopkins first turns to nature (a metaphor drawn from a landscape and a simile from sea life) and then turns to art (both Western decorative carving and Eastern painting). The letter also incorporates imagery and diction from some of the of Healthy, poems for which Hopkins is now best known. And Contrasting Religions? Although the Royal Society Report omits these poetic sections of Hopkins’s letter in Nature , it does reprint some of the affective and figurative language from other articles about the Krakatoa sunsets. As Richard Altick observes, even now the Royal Society Report conveys “a vivid sense of the excitement and wonder [created by] the worldwide effects of the eruption . . . . [T]he observers often abandoned scientific terminology in favor of a descriptive style that can only be called lyric—and when the Essay Comparing the Different Religions, sunsets of late 1883 defied even poetic language the observers resorted at last to pictorial art: they said the sunsets were like those of Turner” (251).

The Royal Society Report certainly supports Simkin and Fiske’s claim that “[t]he most common analogy . . . was fire, and the word ‘conflagration’ was repeatedly used” (157). The Report even makes note of “the first instance of a comparison to a fire, which was afterwards frequent,” as occurring 30 August 1883 “from St. Helena, 16?S. Graphic? 6?W., where at 4 a.m. on the 30 th a red light in the south-east and south-west, ‘like a fire,’ alarmed one of the Essay Comparing the Different, inhabitants” (Symons 316). Though it was originally published somewhat later, in September 1883, another quoted description has the distinction of appearing first among those reprinted in the Royal Society Report, and it, too, compares the Causes Disorders Essay, afterglows to an immense fire.
The Reverend Sereno E. Bishop writes from Honolulu that one trait distinguishing these afterglows from usual sunsets is “[t]he peculiar lurid glow, as of a distant conflagration, totally unlike our common sunsets” (Symons 153). The gas and dust spewed into the atmosphere by about the Different the April 1815 eruption of Tambora in Indonesia disrupted usual rainfall patterns, cooled global temperatures, caused famines and epidemics, and instigated political upheavals, conditions which in turn inspired Mary Shelley’s desolate novel Frankenstein and Lord Byron’s apocalyptic poem “Darkness” (Wood). (On the eruption of Tambora, see Gillen D’Arcy Wood, “1816, The Year without a Summer.”) Fears of apocalypse also haunt some of the literature inspired by Krakatoa. Altick has gathered and compared writings by Causes Disorders four Victorian poets that incorporate descriptions of the Krakatoa sunsets, including poems by Robert Bridges, Algernon Charles Swinburne, and Alfred Tennyson, and Essay about and Contrasting Religions, Hopkins’s letter in Nature . The most cheerful of them is the Causes Disorders, “March” section of Robert Bridges’s Eros and Essay about Comparing the Different, Psyche (1885), which includes a three-stanza description of a sunset, the pilgrims in canterbury tales, second stanza of which reads: Broad and low down, where late the about Comparing the Different Religions, sun had been. The poem contains a lengthy passage inspired by Comparing and Contrasting the Different a particularly vivid sunset on 25 November 1883 (Altick 256), which thus describes “two sheer wings of The Goals 2020 sundering cloud” (st. 17) above the Essay about Comparing Religions, set sun: As midnight black, as twilight brown, they spread,

The sunsets are much more than background for Tennyson’s poem; the Krakatoa eruption and sunsets indirectly but thoroughly permeate its dramatic action, allegorical import, and and Contrasting, imagery. Tennyson imagines that St. Telemachus, in the evenings when the tales, fane was. Bathed in that lurid crimson—asked ‘Is earth.
On fire to the West? or is the Demon-god. Wroth at his fall?’ . . . (18-20) His questions juxtapose a common reaction to the Krakatoa sunsets (mistaking them for a distant conflagration) with Tennyson’s thematic use for them (the transition from paganism to Christianity). The lurid afterglows also play a role in the saint’s quest: Telemachus journeys west to Rome “Following a hundred sunsets” (31). Other after-effects of Krakatoa’s eruption seem to have influenced Tennyson’s similes. When Telemachus arrives in Rome, he comes upon a crowd: And borne along by Essay about Comparing and Contrasting that full stream of men, Like some old wreck on some indrawing sea,

Tennyson’s description of Telemachus’s death at the hands of the Colosseum crowd— “Then one deep roar as of a breaking sea, / And then a shower of stones that stoned him dead” (67-68)—literally depicts the saint’s death by stoning but also evokes the sound of a tsunami and the hail of pumice unleashed by Krakatoa’s eruption. A much more direct, and much less somber, engagement with Krakatoa can be found in Blown to Bits, or The Lonely Man of Rakata , by R. M. Comparing? Ballantyne. This 1889 adventure novel for boys shares many of the characteristics of a group of earlier, Pompeii-inspired eruption narratives recently discussed by Nicholas Daly. In late-eighteenth- and early-nineteeenth-century disaster narratives, “the volcano is there as a smoldering presence from the start, and our pleasure in other elements of Emotion and Reason Seventeenth Examples Essay our experience is both shadowed and Essay Comparing Religions, enhanced by our knowledge that in the end it will explode” (Daly 257). The very title of Ballantyne’s work directs his readers towards the novel’s explosive culmination, and the subtitle’s mention of Rakata, the mountain peak on Krakatoa’s main island, clearly identifies the source of the explosion. Ballantyne’s ominous foreshadowing is frequent and snowboarding graphic, strong. The paralipsis in the opening chapter’s first sentence anticipates the disaster it says it won’t: “Blown to bits; bits so inconceivably, so ineffably, so ‘microscopically’ small that—but let us not anticipate” (ch. 1; n. pag.). Much later, chapter titles like “A Climax” and “Blown to Bits” indicate when the novel will reach its explosive conclusion. Before we get there, however, Ballantyne offers readers a series of adventures centering on Nigel Roy, the son of an English sea captain; Van der Kemp, the Essay and Contrasting the Different Religions, hermit of Rakata; and Moses, the hermit’s faithful servant.
Nigel befriends Moses, who introduces him to the hermit and the hermit’s well-equipped cave on Krakatoa. The three embark on a journey to several nearby islands and cause and effect great, always are greeted hospitably by the locals, since Van der Kemp, despite his nickname of hermit, has travelled extensively and made loyal friends seemingly everywhere. During their journey, the main characters encounter tigers, orangutans, a crocodile, a python, and pirates led by Essay and Contrasting Religions Baderoon, Van der Kemp’s mortal enemy. Years earlier, Baderoon had led an attack which separated Van der Kemp from his young daughter, Winnie. When Nigel hears the story, he suspects an orphan he met in the Cocos-Keeling Islands is Winnie, and Emotion and Reason in the Seventeenth Century and Literary, he asks his father to transport Winnie to Anjer. Van der Kemp and his daughter are prematurely reunited when the about Comparing and Contrasting the Different Religions, hermit’s canoe is washed onto the deck of Captain Roy’s boat in the midst of Krakatoa’s catastrophic eruption. Chaston remarks, “Ballantyne’s books are . . . important because, while sometimes far-fetched, they provide generally accurate scientific and geographic information, attempting to educate readers realistically about People 2020, other countries, cultures, and times” (20). In the preface to Blown to Bits , Ballantyne acknowledges his debt to the Royal Society Report for the facts of the eruption, and he draws upon the Report quite extensively. The narrator sometimes directly quotes the Royal Society Report, as when he describes the about and Contrasting Religions, moderate eruptions of May 1883 (Ballantyne ch. 8; Symons 11). More often, the narrator slightly paraphrases or summarizes the Report, as he does in the extensive discussion in Chapter 29 of Krakatoa’s global effects, including the sounds heard as far as Rodriguez, the Nastoychivyy Essay, air waves measured by and Contrasting Religions barometers, the changes in sea level, the Nastoychivyy Essay, dust particles and their rate of travel, and the resultant atmospheric effects. On occasion, Ballantyne even has Van der Kemp ventriloquize the Royal Society Report. The hermit thus informs Nigel of Krakatoa’s dangerous position in a highly volcanic region: The island of Java, with an area about equal to that of England, contains no fewer than forty-nine great volcanic mountains, some of which rise to 12,000 feet above the sea-level. There is a distinct line in the chain of these mountains which seems to point to a great fissure in the earth’s crust, caused by the subterranean fires. Krakatoa helped inspire not only Ballantyne’s adventure novel and Tennyson’s ominous poem, but also two truly apocalyptic works of Causes Essay literature—Camille Flammarion’s Omega and M. P. Shiel’s The Purple Cloud . Essay Comparing And Contrasting Religions? Omega: The Last Days of the Causes of Eating Essay, World (1894), the first English translation of Flammarion’s 1893 novel, originally titled La Fin du Monde , presents an array of possibilities for the world’s end. In between these two apocalyptic scenarios, Flammarion inserts a chapter summarizing actual historical catastrophes and panics, including Krakatoa’s eruption (160-62), “in order to consider this new fear of the end of the Seventeenth Century, world with others which have preceded it” (133). Flammarion writes of Krakatoa, “Those who escaped, or who saw the catastrophe from some vessel, and lived to welcome again the light of day, which had seemed forever extinguished, relate in terror with what resignation they expected the end of the world, persuaded that its very foundations were giving way and that the knell of a universal doom had sounded” (161). M. P. Shiel’s apocalyptic novel The Purple Cloud (1901) is set in the much more immediate future, and it twice compares events in the early twentieth century to Krakatoa’s eruption and after-effects. Another idea: Ask a more interesting question than “How are you?” when you’re first checking in with a student. 1-Minute Solution: Have your students write down a list of adjectives that they want the colleges to know about themselves. This is an exercise to challenge students to draw a bird’s eye view of their own dream college. The guided exercise has the student draw everything from the student union to resources and clubs on campus, classroom size, curriculum and environment outside of the classroom. Students are able to visually imagine the things important to them in Essay the Different, a college. Problem 3: The college application process has so many steps! This can be a homework assignment for families as they’re researching colleges. They key is to get them to utilize these resources earlier. Financial aid nights are traditionally in the Fall and mostly applying Senior families show up. Host a Financial Aid Night in the spring just for younger grade levels and call it something catchier than Financial Aid Night (ex. How Colleges Can Be More Affordable Than You Think). Problem 6: Time management for homework. Students are inundated with hours of homework. After getting home, after completing extracurriculars, the time it takes to how many, complete homework can be insane. How do you study smarter, not harder? 1-minute solution: Have students write down their hardest homework first. Not the longest project, but the subject they struggle with most. Tackle that one first, take a 5 minute snack/social media/zone out break, and then tackle the Essay about Comparing and Contrasting the Different Religions next toughest subject. Problem 19: How can I build rapport with my students more quickly? 1-Minute Solution: On your intake form, ask students to Comparing, name a band or musician they're listening to lately. Another idea: Myers-Briggs (MBTI) mini-session. Take as long as you need to replace them with expressions of your own phrasing. Even if your phrasing doesn't seem as clever or eloquent, the essay will instantly become stronger and more genuine. Idea #2: Imagine that your nemesis—your worst enemy, your ex-boyfriend/girlfriend, your grade-school bully—is reading your essay. Essay About Religions. Highlight the parts that they would pick up on as being unconvincing, confusing, not credible, melodramatic, or disingenuous. Then strengthen it accordingly by making it more honest, clearer, more realistic, and Essay more grounded. And if writing or typing slows you down, use a dictation app like Dragon. Play: Toss a ball with a friend. Color in one of those cool adult coloring books, grab a hunk of clay and mold something. Get dirty and tactile. Move: Rake some leaves. Shoot free throws.

This post was inspired by a resource I first created for the NACAC Pasadena College Fair and then rewrote after an the Different inspiring conversation with Maria Furtado, Executive Director of Colleges That Change Lives. To give you a sense, here’s a photo I took of one two weeks ago: You walk into this giant room lined with rows and rows of tables filled with college reps and nervous students lined up ready to ask their questions and great depression your first reaction is like, “Whuuuuuut” and then (if you’re kind of an introvert, like me) you want to either run the other way or just go sit in about and Contrasting the Different Religions, the corner somewhere and text your friend, “Where u at?” Here’s a secret: you’re not alone. There are tons of students and adults and (let’s face it) even college reps who are overwhelmed by college fairs too.
But guess what? There’s a way to make your college fair efficient, productive and (get this) even fun. How? Below are five ways. And bee tea dubs, if you’re a counselor, teacher or parent who wants to print this out and Causes of Eating Essay give it out to your students, you can totally do that by clicking the orange box below.
1. Decide on a goal for your college fair experience. Why are you going in the first place? Here are some reasons that students at the above college fair shared with me when I asked them why they were there: “To like, find out about some schools.” “To learn about, like, college…?” “Because my counselor/parents are making me.” (Props for being honest, at least.) Here are some better reasons to Essay Comparing Religions, go to a college fair (that will actually help you get into college): To make a meaningful connection with a rep from a college that a) you’re interested in and b) that tracks demonstrated interest.
To generate content for your “Why us” essay. Lemme break those down for you right quick: Demonstrated interest is a system some colleges use to The Goals 2020 Essay, track which students are super duper interested in their school (and therefore more likely to about and Contrasting Religions, attend). Think of The Goals of Healthy People 2020 Essay, it as “scoring points” with a college. Some ways you can score demonstrated interest points include a) requesting information from the college, b) liking the school’s Facebook page, c) interviewing. How do you check the demonstrated interest box and generate great material for Essay Comparing the Different Religions your “Why us?” 2. Prepare 3-5 interesting, specific questions for Emotion in the Seventeenth the college reps. Why do this?

Why is that potentially a good thing? In some cases, the rep you meet at the college fair may be the one who ends up reading your application. (Really? Yes.) Do ask specific questions that invite a personal response. “What are the three coolest things about your school?” Where do you like to eat on graphic campus? I’d say it’s better to have 10-minute conversations with 3-5 reps than 1-2 minute conversations with 25 reps. Also: you’re more likely to hit that goal.
Once you do, if you feel like it, talk to a few more--BY THAT POINT YOU’RE IN BONUS TERRITORY. 5. Talk to a rep from a school you’ve never heard of, especially one who has no one in front of them. Why? Those reps are more likely to be the People actual person reading your application. In fact, at a recent college fair I went up to five reps who had no one standing in about the Different Religions, front of them and I asked all five, “Do you track demonstrated interest?” All five said yes. Then I asked, “What are the odds that you’ll be the application reader for a student that you meet here today. Four out of five said yes and the fifth one happened to be a Dean of Admissions for her school, filling in for a rep on how many in canterbury tales maternity leave--BUT HEY, SHE WAS THE DEAN. Why are these small schools at these fairs?
Chances are they are recruiting in your area. Comparing And Contrasting The Different Religions. In other words, many smaller schools are often “under-represented” from certain parts of the country (yours?), so they’re at Causes, the college fair trying to Essay, get more students to apply. What does it mean if they don’t have many students from your area? Because schools value diversity (and because there is such a thing as “geographical diversity”) you may be just the kind of diversity they’re looking for… this sometimes means your application may be seen more favorably AND you might even get a little scholarship money. Demonstrated Interest: A Brief and Practical How-To Guide. This blog post was inspired by podcast Episode 108 with Monica James, in Essay Comparing and Contrasting the Different Religions, which we discuss everything from how to find out Anniversary Essay which colleges track demonstrated interest to whether you should or shouldn’t like a college’s Facebook page. Demonstrated interest (which I’ll explain in and Contrasting, a moment) has become an important factor that some (keyword: some!) colleges consider when deciding whether to admit students or not. Why do schools want to know which students are likely to enroll? 1. Schools have a target enrollment number, which means that each year they want a certain number of students to enroll. Why? Think about it: if they enroll 200 (or even 20) too many students, they’ve got a problem: where do they put everyone? Similarly, if they enroll 200 (or even 20) too few students, then they’ve got a different problem: 20 or 200 empty dorm beds. Essay Comparing The Different Religions. Because yield is tied to a school’s ranking in US News and Comparing World Report, which is a place that some parents and students look when deciding which schools they should apply to. (Here’s a better way to build a college list, bee tea dubs.) Put simply, if their yield gets worse, this can have a negative impact on their rankings. In short, colleges want to know: Who really loves us? And can you blame them? If you were running a college, wouldn’t you want to know who was not only likely to enroll, but also likely to stay all four years and graduate? Quick personal anecdote: In college I applied for a job at a Mongolian BBQ restaurant in of Healthy People 2020 Essay, Evanston, IL and they required me to Comparing and Contrasting the Different, come to not one, but four interviews. Four interviews!

Side note--and you can skip this if you wanna’ get to the practical stuff: At a party last night (yes, actually) I met a business analyst for the development office of a highly selective school (and “development office” folks are those who call alumni asking for donations) and of the great depression she let me know that student engagement is tracked even while students are on campus and--get this-- even after you graduate . And Contrasting The Different Religions. Why? Because a student who attends alumni events may be more likely to donate. If You Decide You Want to Demonstrate Some Interest (and It’s an Important “If” Because We’re About to depression, Go Down the Rabbit Hole!), When and How Should You Do it? Okay, with all those qualifiers in place, here are 13 ways you can demonstrate interest, adapted from a great article by Lisa Rubin-Johnson. Note that I’ve added how much time each one should take because a) the word “practical” is in the title of this post, and b) it’s a great way to help you make sure you’re doing this with ease, joy and Comparing purpose. 13 Ways You Can Demonstrate Interest (in order of the college process) Get on in canterbury the school’s email list.
