Motifs in The Scarlet Letter | Study com

Lake Narotch was one of the decisive battles of the motif First World War. The last real effort by mesopotamian the old Russian army—as distinct from the letter motif new, which emerged in summer 1916 on Brusilov’s front—was the offensive staged at Lake Narotch in March 1916. It was an the ancient mariner analysis affair that summed up all that was most wrong with the army. There had been talk of a spring offensive for some time—Stavka had felt that the results of Sventsiany in September 1915 justified a renewal of the offensive in this region; and the French were even told that it could well win the war outright. Now, the bulk of letter, German troops had gone against France, had lost heavily at Verdun. Evert, commander of the western Front, was full of rather ill-defined pugnacity—though also, by one account, ‘gaga’ to the point of writing ‘Mariya’ for ‘Armiya’. Alienation? Moreover, the French had been told, in December, that if one ally was attacked, the others must launch immediate offensives to save it—an argument designed to save the Russian army from the isolation of scarlet motif, summer 1915, and now turned against Russia. Definition Of Discipline? French appeals for scarlet help went out what as soon as the German offensive began at Verdun. Alexeyev could not refuse his help.

Stavka was now prisoner of its own arguments. Alexeyev had told Zhilinski to suggest that Russia was now strong enough to attack. Privately, he did not feel this at all—there had been delays in the re-organisation, and letter motif the army, now counting 1,700,000 men at marx the front—with 1,250,000 rifles—was not yet strong enough for letter offensive action. Evert, too, began to quail at the thought of attack once he was asked to bring his pugnacity to some concrete expression—no doubt he had, in the interim, read the south-western commanders’ reports on the failure of the ancient, their winter offensive, where a thousand guns with a thousand rounds each, and two-fold superiority of numbers, had failed to scarlet motif make much of Media Integration Essay, a dent in letter the Austro-Hungarian lines. But not much could be done: an ancient offensive would have to be staged for the benefit of the French.

On 24th February—three days after the Germans launched their attack on Verdun—there was a conference in Stavka. The Russian superiority of numbers was now considerable—on the northern front, 300,000 to 180,000; on the western, 700,000 to 360,000 (917 battalions to 382) with 526 cavalry squadrons to letter motif 144; and on of discipline the south-western front, about scarlet motif, half a million men on either side (684 Russian battalions to 592, and 492 squadrons to 239). It was felt that the western front—Evert’s—should attack. The shell-reserve had now been built up to 1,250 rounds for the 5,000 field guns, 540 for the 585 field-howitzers, and 685 rounds each for nearly a thousand guns—a force that, if concentrated, must surely bring great results. Social? It would be Evert’s duty to ensure concentration of this force. There were also, now, increasingly, rises in the number of battalions and divisions, of which there were 152 in March, 163? in scarlet letter motif summer, with forty-seven cavalry divisions, later fifty. The area of attack18 was much the ancient mesopotamian same as in September 1915—east of scarlet, Vilna. The two army groups, Kuropatkin’s and Evert’s, must co-operate in attacking, one to the south-west against Vilna, the other due west from the line of lakes east of the ancient mariner analysis, Vilna.

The Russians’ superiority was a considerable one—II Army, on the line of lakes, assembled 253 battalions and 233 squadrons of scarlet letter, cavalry, over 350,000 men, with 605 light and 282 heavy guns—982 in all if two corps in reserve are included. There were ten army corps involved, over twenty divisions. The German X Army, here, had four and a half infantry divisions, subsequently built up to seven: 75,000 men, with 300 guns, subsequently built up to 440. It is, in the first place, notable enough that the Russian superiority at Lake Narotch—in men, guns, and shell (since each gun had a thousand rounds and more) was considerably greater than had been the Germans’ superiority in May 1915 at Gorlice, or even in July 1915 on the Narev. The difficulties came, as usual, with command and operations. In the first place, the promised co-operation of Kuropatkin’s front did not come into much effect, beyond a feeble demonstration at Dvinsk that cost 15,000 men. II Army was commanded by Media Essay General Smirnov, born in 1849, ‘a soft old man with no distinction of motif, any kind’. Usually, he played patience while Evert’s chief of staff did the mesopotamian work; Evert, himself elderly, resisted attempts to have him dismissed by reason of age; and he was removed from command only just before the attack, to be replaced by letter motif the younger Ragoza—a man altogether unfamiliar with II Army, and subsequently replaced in turn by Smirnov. Marx? The corps were drawn up in groups, each commanded by the commander of scarlet, one of the claim definition corps involved—as usual, on principles of seniority. In this case, the groups were taken by Pleshkov, Sirelius, Baluyev. Of Sirelius, Alexeyev wrote, ‘It seems unlikely that he will be able to manage the bold and connected offensive action or the systematic execution of scarlet letter motif, a plan that are needed.’ But attempts to remove Sirelius broke down because, it is alleged, ‘some old granny still has flutterings about the heart when his name comes up’.

The offensive was carried out at a time of the year that could not have been less suitable if it had been chosen by the Germans. It opened on 18th March. The winter conditions had given way to those of early spring—alternating freezes and thaws that made the roads either an ice-rink or a morass. Shell would explode to little effect against the ancient mariner, ground that was either hard as iron or churned to a morass; gas was also ineffective in the cold. Supplies presented problems that the best-trained army would have found impossible to letter motif solve: the man-handling of boxes of heavy shell through slush that was a foot deep. The Russian rear was a scene of the ancient mariner, epic confusion—complicated by the astonishingly large masses of cavalry deployed there, to letter motif no effect whatsoever at the front. Essay? It was altogether an episode that suggests commanders had lost such wits as they still possessed. Preparations had gone on for some time, or so Evert alleged. In practice, the Russians’ positions were sketchy—some parts of their line were protected only by staves in the ground, and Kondratovitch, who inspected II Army’s positions, said that, when snow fell, rifle-fire became impossible. 20.Corps was sited in a marshy region, with its rear in full view of motif, German artillery. There had been almost no preparation of dug-outs—nor, in view of the season, could there be.

But the elderly commanders, their mental digestions still coping uneasily with the lessons of 1915, were in no condition to think things out. The Germans received a fortnight’s warning of the definition offensive—it was even discussed by the cooks in Evert’s headquarters three weeks before it began. The attack began with bombardment on 18th March, the northernmost of the corps groups—Pleshkov’s—leading off. Of all bombardments in the First World War, this was—with strong competition—the most futile. It was subsequently known as ‘General Pleshkov’s son et lumiere’. A subsequent investigation of the artillery-affairs in this battle revealed that only in Baluyev’s group had there been discussion between senior artillery and scarlet motif infantry officers on the ground—as distinct from mesopotamian maps—as to how things should go.

Almost no reconnaissance had been conducted, so that the guns fired blind—on Pleshkov’s front, they were even told to scarlet fire blind into a wood, behind which the Germans were thought to be. On Sirelius’s front, the Media Integration guns registered on their own infantry’s trenches, in case the Germans came to occupy them. Scarlet Motif? The guns were useless against German enfilading-positions and communications-trenches, since no-one knew with any accuracy where they were; even observation-posts for the guns were, as things turned out, vulnerable to machine-gun fire. It was only on mesopotamian 7th March that Pleshkov’s artillery was told what to do, and the instructions were changed on 13th March, the scarlet motif guns having to claim in literature be hauled over marsh and slush to new positions. A further peculiarity was that artillery was divided into light and heavy groups: the heavy artillery of Pleshkov’s group was mainly concentrated in the hands of Zakutovski, the light artillery mainly in the hands of Prince Masalski, corps artillery commander. The two men quarrelled—Zakutovski believing that, as commander of the whole group’s artillery, he should be giving the orders, while Masalski reckoned that, being commander of artillery in the corps mainly involved (1.), he should have the letter task.

There was almost no co-operation between the two men; and claim definition in literature shell-delivery became difficult enough, since heavy rounds would be delivered to Masalski, light ones to Zakutovski, and not released by them—even if the morass had allowed it. One Corps (1st Siberian) got half the shell it needed; another (1st) twice as much as it could use. Letter Motif? This was more than a battle of the ancient mariner, competence. It reflected the poor state of relations between infantrymen and gunners, Masalski protecting the one, and Zakutovski the other. Scarlet Letter? In this way, many gunners’ tasks were not carried out at all, and mesopotamian many duplicated. Light artillery tried to do the work of heavy, heavy of light. Pleshkov had supposed that a narrow concentration of guns—on two kilometres of his twenty-kilometre sector—would create a break-through.

His guns fired off their 200 rounds per day, commanders feeling that a weight like this—after all, equivalent to three months’ use of letter, shell, as foreseen in 1914—could not go wrong. With four army corps on a front of twenty kilometres, against a German infantry division with one cavalry division, there ought not, in Media Essay commanders’ view, to be any difficulty. By sending in waves of infantry on two kilometres, Pleshkov merely gave the German artillery a magnificent target; and when, as happened, these occupied German trenches, they would be fired on scarlet letter from three sides by German guns on the sides of the salient—guns that had been registered previously on the trenches, which were found evacuated. One division attacked before the other, because of an error in telephone-messages; it even attacked, on 18th March, under its own bombardment, no doubt because liaison between Zakutovski and Masalski was so poor. A further corps assaulted the woods of the ancient analysis, Postawy, also in vain—German guns being concealed by the woods.

In all, Pleshkov’s group lost 15,000 men in the first eight hours of this offensive—three-quarters of the infantry mustered for attack, although fifteen per cent of Pleshkov’s total force. On 19th March the attacks were continued, although trenches now filled with water as rain came, with a thaw. There were minor tactical successes—600 prisoners being taken—and losses of 5,000 in a few hours, equivalent to a whole brigade. On 21st March Pleshkov tried again, and motif even Kuropatkin stumbled forward. Alienation Marx? Each lost 10,000. In the rear, confusion—brought about scarlet motif, mainly by definition the presence of 233 cavalry squadrons, who monopolised supplies and scarlet transport—was of crisis proportions, the hospital-trains breaking down, troops going hungry while meat rotted in depots. Over half of all orders were countermanded. The only success of alienation marx, any dimensions came on Baluyev’s front, on scarlet motif Lake Narotch, where artillery and infantry had co-operated. Ancient Mesopotamian Music? At dawn on 21st March Baluyev attacked along the shores of Lake Narotch, using the ice, and helped by thick fog.

His gunners sustained an artillery duel with the Germans, and a few square miles were taken, with some thousand prisoners. Sirelius, to the north, would not help at all, relapsing into scarlet letter cabbalistic utterance, and losing only one per cent of his force—through frost-bite. Claim Definition In Literature? In the next few days, there were repeated attempts by Baluyev and scarlet letter Pleshkov; then the definition of discipline affair settled down to an artillery-duel. Scarlet Motif? Later on, in April, the Germans took what they had lost. In all, they had had to move three divisions to face this attack, ostensibly, of 350,000 Russians. Not one of these came from the western front. Social Integration Essay? The Russian army lost 100,000 men in this engagement—as well as 12,000 men who died of frostbite. The Germans claimed to have lifted 5,000 corpses from their wire. They themselves lost 20,000 men. Lake Narotch was, despite appearances, one of the decisive battles of the First World War.

It condemned most of the Russian army to passivity. Generals supposed that, if 350,000 men and a thousand guns, with ‘mountains’ of shell to use, had failed, then the task was impossible—unless there were extraordinary quantities of shell. Alexeyev himself made this point to Zhilinski, saying that the French Army itself demanded 4,200 rounds per light gun, and 600 per heavy gun, before they would consider an offensive, and Russia had not these quantities. Scarlet? In practice, even Russia could have assembled such quantities on a given area of front had the generals managed their reserves properly. But they had no way of arranging sacrifices by one part of the front to definition the benefit of another; they did not understand the tactical problems; and, certainly, recognition of the extreme incompetence with which affairs had been combined in March, 1916 remained platonic. As before, artillery and infantry blamed each other, the only positive consequence being a demand for yet more shell. The way was open to Upart’s demand for 4,500,000 rounds per month, and also to the eighteen million shells that were stock-piled, to no effect save, in letter motif the end, to enable the Bolsheviks to claim definition fight the scarlet letter motif Civil War.

Now the western and northern army groups would have no stomach for attack. It was only the emergence of a general whose common-sense amounted to brilliance, and who selected a group of staff-officers who were almost a kernel of the Red Army, that gave the Russian army a great role in 1916.

essay outline hook In a 1971 fight, Joe Frazier famously floored boxing champ Muhammad Ali with a strong left hook, leading to Ali’s first ever professional loss in the boxing ring. Letter Motif. This is in literature most definitely not the source of the word “hook” in letter motif writing, but the analogy is as solid as Frazier’s punch. No matter what type of hathaway, writing project you’re getting into right now, you need a strong hook that knocks your readers’ socks off and gets their attention. When I talk about good hook sentences, I’m talking about motif that juicy string of words that make up the first sentence (or two) of your writing project—the words that grab your readers’ attention and don’t let go. Good hook sentences say, “Drop everything you’re doing and Social Integration read me right now,” without actually coming out and just saying that. Writing good hook sentences is critical in all types of writing disciplines from letter essays and claim definition marketing copy to novels and short stories. Hooks are even used in scarlet motif song lyrics. I’m sure, on more than one occasion, you’ve fallen victim to an earworm (a set of lyrics that you can’t get out of mariner analysis, your head).

That’s because you got hooked. I got the eye of the tiger… oh…um, sorry, I wasn’t listening to motif Katy Perry, I swear! Now, here’s the catch. There’s no single, tried and true formula to writing good hook sentences. There is no specific order of nouns, verbs, and adjectives that will get the job done. But when it comes time to KO your readers, this post will give you four simple steps to help you craft your perfect hook. Good Hook Sentences Step 1—Identify Your Audience.

Your hook sentence, just like the rest of your writing project, needs to speak to claim your specific audience. Getting the attention of a college professor is going to be a vastly different task than getting the motif attention of a group of stay-at-home moms, for example. Before you write your hook, ask yourself three key questions: It’s important to definition of discipline identify your audience no matter what type of writing project you’re working on. Doing so will help you select a message that speaks to them. If you’re trying to get the attention of a bunch of middle school girls, for example, you either need to be Justin Bieber in scarlet letter motif the flesh or write a hook that is geared toward that age group. If, however, your writing project is geared toward the mariner admissions counselors at letter a prestigious university, you had better get a haircut, Bieber, and write your sentence appropriately.

Before setting out on this writing adventure, make note of your intended audience. Question 2: Do I have a captive audience? This question is definition important because it will help you better understand the purpose of your hook. In the case of your teacher or an admissions counselor, you pretty much have a captive audience. They are being paid to read your writing. So the intention of your hook is to keep these people from falling asleep on scarlet letter motif the job, to Integration entice them to give you a good grade, or to scarlet letter convince them to admit you into their institution. If you’re writing a blog, a book, or marketing copy, then your audience is not captive, meaning they have a choice to read your work or not. Whether your writing appears online, at mesopotamian music the bookstore, or on a publishing agent’s desk, your work is one second away from being skipped over in favor of the next piece of writing. In this scenario, a good hook is the lifeline of your writing. Question 3: What matters to my audience?

Finally, you need to scarlet motif figure out claim definition in literature, what is scarlet letter important to your audience. Are they interested in solving a particular problem? Are they looking for a specific type of Social Essay, information? Do they want to know something interesting about you? Do they want to scarlet know that you understand a particular topic? For example, if you are writing an argumentative essay, your hook should reflect the strength of your argument, perhaps by stating a shocking fact. On the other hand, if you’re writing a love story, you might start off writing a sweet and romantic anecdote. And if you’re writing a frightening essay on the topic of Social Media Essay, nuclear warheads, you might select to begin with a chilling statistic. When identifying your purpose, ask yourself these two questions: Question 1: How do I want my audience to feel? Your answer could be that you want them to letter feel frightened, or motivated to action, or warm and fuzzy like they have a cute puppy on Essay their lap, or interested in your life story.

The point is to write a hook that elicits the types of feelings you want your audience to have. Question 2: What do I want my audience to take away? Your answer could be that you want them to be better educated on letter a certain topic, or that you want them to question reality, or that you want them to mesopotamian believe in love again. A good hook will reflect the scarlet letter purpose of your writing and set the stage for how you want your audience to feel and hathaway what is love what you want them to scarlet letter take away from ancient music your work. Good Hook Sentences Step 3—Choose Your Hook Wisely. Honestly, this is how you should approach writing all of your sentences, but if you only scarlet motif have one absolutely perfect sentence in your work, let it be your hook. One more note: even though your hook sentence is your very first sentence, it’s a good idea to write it last. By writing it last, you can better capture the tone and purpose of your entire writing project. Remember, a good hook sets up expectations about analysis your writing, establishes your credibility as a writer, grabs your readers’ attention, and makes them eager to letter read your work. Letter Motif. Some farmers also inject insecticides into Social Media Integration Essay the chests of minks. It takes several minutes for scarlet letter motif the minks to die a painful death. This is just one example of the Media Essay reality that animal cruelty is based on. So..Why should animals have rights? Yes, this hook definitely gets my attention (and leaves me feeling very sad!) It’s a wonderful post.

Alienation Definition. The idea is to give just a little bit away in the hook, but not the whole story. Maybe tell the story of a dancer who injured him/herself due to over stretching, or you could find some compelling statistics on the topic if there are any available.

I am writing a research paper on the history of cars but im struggling on letter a good hook any help. I wonder if there is any way you can bring to the ancient analysis life the awe an excitement people felt when they first began to scarlet letter motif see cars on Media Essay the roads. Scarlet Motif. I used a stat in my drasft but my teacher didn’t like it. Bummer because a stat would be the perfect choice for this type of essay. Did your teacher not like the stat because he doesn’t like stats as hooks? Or was it because the of discipline stat wasn’t interesting/compelling. If it’s the second reason, you might find a better more interesting stat to replace the one you had originally.

You also need to make sure it comes from scarlet letter a valid source and not just some random website. If a stat just wont’ do, you could decide to Media write an attention grabbing question or fact about the consequences of motif, obesity. You might find this post helpful to give you more ideas: and more specifically: Very helpful. Thank you. Hi i am writing about gastric ulcers and how they are due to the ancient mariner bacteria H.pylori which is caused by contaminated water. However I don’t know how to start the hook any help?

My answer depends on how formal the essay is letter motif going to be. If you are writing a scientific, formal document, a good hook would be a surprising statistic on definition this subject. Scarlet Letter. For example how many people are affected by this problem each year? Make sure your stat is from a credible source. If this is a more relaxed essay, perhaps to inform laymen about music this problem, then a graphic description of letter motif, what these gastric ulcers are and what they do could make a compelling hook. Thanks for your comment! Hi, I have to write a persuasive speech for my English class with the goal of convincing district administration that my high school needs to the ancient mariner implement literature circles/book discussion as well as time for reading for pleasure into the English curriculum, because students in my school are not given nearly enough time to read literature (especially that which they enjoy). I need to convey that reading is a highly beneficial activity, contributing to increased cognitive abilities, that students who enjoy reading feel they don’t get to do enough of it, and that students who do not read often fall behind in mental development. I’m not sure what type of letter, hook to use. Of Discipline. I think a statistic, but I’m not sure how to craft a powerful, intriguing hook about this topic.

Any ideas? One potentially gripping hook would be to tell a short, true story about a kid whose life changed for the better thanks to reading. Thanks so much for the ancient mariner the suggestion, I do have a good story to use! I need a hook about how Muir and Wordsworth express their relationship with nature. Hi :)) thank you for this effective post :)) Im going to write my personal essay telling a story about Integration Essay how I became hard working after a study failure. This failure directly linked to scarlet motif my personal background ( my parents divorced, my mom had to anne hathaway earn a lot of money to pay the tuition fee, but i wasted it by having failed the English course = after this i realized that being diligent is very important). Doyou have any suggestion about how I can start my essay with a hook?

Thank you very much :)) Since your whole essay is going to center on motif your story, one strategy that could be great here is to start in the middle of your story — the moment you realized that you were failing. Here’s an example of what I mean: “At the moment I glanced at my pile of forgotten homework and turned back to the television, I realized that things weren’t going as planned.” Picking up in the middle creates intrigue and mystery and draws the reader in, so it can be a really effective hook for a personal essay! Happy writing #128578; I am writing a persuasive essay on “why video games are good for claim you”. I need help with a hook. I think that a surprising statistic would work great with your angle on letter the topic. Perhaps you can take one of your reasons/main ideas and look for mesopotamian a statistic that supports that, such as “People who play video games are X% more likely to Y.” A short yet surprising anecdote (a story about someone whose life was improved by gaming) could also work here. You could share a short “horror story” about the motif perils of not finishing a task, either a story from the ancient your own experience or someone that you know.

Then, your essay will help to show how that crisis could have been avoided by implementing your chosen habit. I think that I would pick two or three main “reasons” that you should finish your work/tasks for the body of your essay. Scarlet Letter. For instance, maybe you could focus on anne hathaway the fact that doing so relieves stress (because you’re not worrying about what’s left unfinished), reduces mistakes (because you don’t forget important steps of the tasks or rush the job), and leaves you more free time (because you aren’t playing catch up). You might consider using the “paint a picture” strategy here, especially if you’re focusing on your physical environment — you would describe the scarlet motif environment in great detail so that the reader can imagine it. The Ancient. You could also share a short anecdote about an experience from your childhood that helped to shape who you became. One way you could start off your paper is by describing yourself in the middle of achieving one of your life’s goals — a nice, detailed description of scarlet motif, your cushy office or reaching the peak of Mt. I’m writing an argumentative essay on why Creon is the tragic hero of Sophocles’ Antigone. Any ideas for scarlet letter a creative hook?

For a literary analysis, I think that a quote is a great way to go — see if you can find something that “sums up” Creon’s character (and/or flaws) — this will help to marx set the tone for your essay. A quote from a third party about heroism (or tragic heroism, in letter motif particular) could also work here. So I’m writing an argumentative essay on if the U.S. ARMY is professional organization or not. I’m having a trouble trying to come up with a good hook. You might start with a surprising statistic for definition of discipline this one: for scarlet letter motif instance, if you could find out what percentage of claim definition, enlisted Army members are “professionals” in some capacity or receive “professional” training. (This, of course, only works if you’re arguing that the Army is indeed a professional organization!) Another angle that could work is to describe ‘a day in the life’ of a specific person in the Army in detail, but without stating outright that the motif person is in ancient mesopotamian music the Army — then you could reveal that fact later on. I think this angle works best if you choose someone who has a role that falls outside the combat stereotype. I hope this helps you start off on the right foot. Happy writing!

For instance, some people might not think that finance is very exciting; you could change this perception by describing the most money you’ve ever handled/managed in one day (if that’s an impressive number!). I am writing an essay about how one’s culture views others of the world and I can’t think of how to of discipline start it off with a good hook. One interesting way to start this paper might be by scarlet motif describing a cultural view or tradition that may seem strange or surprising but is very normal/traditional to the members of that culture — that would be a good idea to lead into how cultures differ and how we see them through the lens of our own culture. For your hook, you might consider a stirring/interesting quote from the book (or the movie). On April 27, 2015, Christine Foster, a Liberal Party councillor and the sister of the then Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, moved a motion at motif the Sydney City Council calling for a formal apology to the original gay and lesbian Mardi Gras marchers. It was passed unanimously. The NSW Parliament is expected to debate a motion to offer such an apology in the first sitting of Parliament in 2016. Is a formal apology warranted? To answer this question, some understanding of the anne what is love, prevailing oppressive social conditions affecting the lives of scarlet letter sexual minorities (now termed GLBTIQ communities) in Australia in the 1960s and 70s is required. What is needed, too, is a better knowledge of the actual, momentous events that took place in Sydney between June and definition, August 1978, when violent social unrest and public protests on the streets erupted with far-reaching effects for Australia that can now be seen in historical context. On a cold Saturday night in Sydney on scarlet letter motif, June 24, 1978, a number of gay men, lesbians and transgender people marched into anne hathaway the pages of Australian social history. Scarlet Motif? I was one of Integration them. Gay activists in San Francisco had asked the Gay Solidarity Group in Sydney for support in their campaigns in California and the word had got out. At Taylor Square, where we assembled, I was impressed by the turnout (a report in The Australian estimated the crowd at about 1,000 people at Media Essay this early stage of the night). The atmosphere was more one of celebration than protest.

Little did we know then that, by the end of the night, many of us would be traumatised and our lives changed forever. As a young emigre in my twenties, from the mesopotamian music, Queensland bush, like many gay men and lesbians from the country in those days, I was, in effect, an letter internally displaced person. We were refugees in definition of discipline our own country. Having arrived in Sydney seeking refuge from the scarlet motif, never-ending police state of mind that was life under the Joh Bjelke-Petersen Queensland government, I was renting a studio flat in Crown Street, Darlinghurst, at the time. The Stonewall Riot, which had occurred nine years earlier, far away in Greenwich Village on Manhattan in mariner analysis New York, marks the modern era of “homosexual liberation”. This oft-quoted term was popularised as early as 1971 by Dennis Altman, the Australian academic who became a leading voice of the movement. We started off from Taylor Square in a festive mood. Chants rippled along the marchers, strangers joined hands and Social Media, we sought to bring people out of the bars and into motif the streets to join us. Some did come out of the bars and joined us; others lined up and watched the what, parade but did not join in.

I heard the commonly used Australian put-down of those times, “poofters”, hurled at us. “Ratbag poofters”, too. When we reached Hyde Park we were denied entry. Confusion reigned and an officer in authority appeared intent on scarlet, breaking up the march. His derogatory tone of mesopotamian voice and the way he hurled insults and abuse angered all within earshot. Police and marchers met in letter the 1978 Mardi Gras. The Pride History Group , Author provided. It soon became clear that our open-back truck that would have provided the disco music for a party and a platform for speeches in the park was to be forcefully confiscated and the driver arrested. We then realised it would be a mistake for definition marx, us to enter Hyde Park at all. At the front of the march I remember a few split seconds of initial doubt that we would be able to do it, and then, in perfect, bold, spontaneous unison, at our success in breaking through the cordon of police across College Street, we shouted, “On to the Cross!” (Kings Cross).

With an exhilarating surge of energy we turned from College Street into letter William Street. Propelled onwards with hundreds joining in behind us, we turned left into Darlinghurst Road into the heart of Kings Cross. The Ancient Analysis? We were sick and tired of letter motif being criminalised, pathologised, demonised, of being made to hide who we were and having our rights to live as human beings denied. The 1978 Mardi Gras. The Pride History Group , Author provided. That night we were in the streets and we were determined to get our message to Social Essay as many people as possible. After marching down Oxford Street and seeing our numbers swell as many people came out of the scarlet motif, coffee shops, bars and hotels to join us, now we wanted to alienation definition marx call on scarlet, everybody in the Cross to listen to our chants and come out and support us as well. Of Discipline? We chanted: “Out of the bars and into motif the streets!” We wanted the whole world to hear our cries for freedom from the oppression that characterised our lives.

In numbers, suddenly, wonderfully, we were unafraid. Here there was a direct parallel with Stonewall, for as with the NYPD, the alienation definition marx, NSW police force faced an unexpected and vigorous resistance. As determined as they were to put us back in our closets there was no stopping us. Motif? Now we were coming out. And now we had straight people willing to Social Essay join in and support us. In Darlinghurst Road in Kings Cross we were cut off and ambushed with hundreds of police with dozens of wagons blocking us in front and from behind.

These were critical moments, because in truth the crowd would most likely have dispersed at this point. Yet the real violence was about to begin. It was there in Darlinghurst Road that we faced the most brutal onslaught of the whole night. The police, arriving in numbers, took advantage of the semi darkness of the night, unleashing a reckless and ugly attack on letter motif, the marchers. They acted as if they had a licence to Social Media Integration Essay inflict as much injury as they could and scarlet motif, I feared there would be dead bodies everywhere if they had guns in those paddy wagons and were to open fire. Despite that fear we did not run, we fought back, resisting arrest as the ancient, police wielded their heavy batons indiscriminately. The Pride History Group , Author provided. The more we were assaulted the more we resisted. The group-solidarity had taken hold as we tried to letter motif stand our ground, rescuing “brothers” and “sisters” from the clutches of the police as they were being forced into paddy-wagons.

I distinctly remember the way that the police near the El Alamein Fountain targeted women for arrest, in particular, and mariner analysis, the smaller and more vulnerable among us. The first Mardi Gras is letter motif, often described as a riot but I didn’t see it that way. It was a very defiant act of resistance that proved a turning point. We were willing to stand up, to resist. We were people too; our sexualities may have been diverse and different but that did not make us any less human than others. The discriminatory attitude of the police and the violence they meted out to us seemed to represent in highly symbolic and condensed form the definition in literature, very pain, humiliation and suffering that society as a whole constantly inflicted on us as lesbians and gay men. The 1978 Mardi Gras parade.

Author provided. Some 53 men and women were arrested, all of whom – unhelpfully – had their names and occupations subsequently published in The Sydney Morning Herald. Scarlet Motif? Many lost their jobs or housing as a result. Gail Hewison, one of the women detained, described to mariner analysis me the whole experience of being locked-up without charge as one of shock and trauma. She had all her possessions taken away from her including her glasses. She told me she could hear the sounds of a man being horribly beaten in another cell. Then, after a while she also began to hear the supportive chants of the crowds gathering outside.

In front of the police station, close to Oxford Street and Taylor Square where the march had started hours earlier, battered and letter, bruised, hundreds of us gathered in an enraged state shouting, “Let them free!”. We continued the refrains from our earlier chants: Two four six eight, gay is of discipline, just as good as straight! Looking out at the angry crowd the police inside the station must have been apprehensive about what would happen next. They were greatly outnumbered and for some moments as we inched closer and closer, you could sense an urge on the part of the letter motif, crowd to takeover the definition, police station, to demand the letter, jailers keys and so to ancient mesopotamian release our brothers and sisters. Over the years I have often wondered why we didn’t storm the building then and there. Strangely after a short period of silence somebody started to sing the Afro-American spiritual “We shall overcome” and the whole crowd joined in: We shall not, we shall not be moved. We shall not, we shall not be moved. Just like a tree that’s standing by the water.

We shall not be moved. Reflecting on this now I would like to think that, despite the provocation on that night itself and the centuries of violence that had been perpetrated upon scarlet, us, we as a collective knew instinctively that violence was one of our main grievances and we had a mission to resist it and definition marx, fight against violence using other means. Someone in the crowd cried out, “I am a lawyer. Letter? Are there any other lawyers or solicitors here? We need to raise bail money!”. Definition Of Discipline? The campaign to win the legal battles was now well underway, culminating in scarlet letter 1984 when homosexuality was decriminalised in the NSW Parliament.

The 1978 Mardi Gras parade. Definition? The Pride History Group , Author provided. This brief narrative of the first Mardi Gras is told because the events of that night, their causes and repercussions can now be placed in clearer historical perspective and they help us to understand why keeping politics at the centre of the annual Mardi Gras is so important. As Dennis Altman pointed out in The End of the Homosexual? (2013), it was the precise timing of the Mardi Gras leading to scarlet the decriminalisation of homosexuality in NSW in 1984 that ultimately helped save thousands of definition Australian lives in the HIV epidemic that hit Sydney hard in motif 1985. The epidemic could only have been handled as effectively as it was because decriminalisation and critical bi-partisan cross party political support resulted in more openness and less stigma. The old days of alienation definition identity politics are now gone and labels are eschewed in scarlet letter motif these times where the fluidity of sexuality is recognised and better understood.

But the ancient music, struggle is not over. In 2013 we witnessed the arrest of a young teenager at the Mardi Gras parade who was assaulted and abused in ways reminiscent of 1978. Again the police were not held accountable for their actions. Young people are still ending their lives because of the pain and homophobia they experience. Scarlet Motif? If there is a timely lesson for the police here it is in alienation marx the need for letter motif, an authentic engagement with minority groups where honesty and respect replaces suspicion and contempt. So at the same time we celebrate just how far GLBTQI people in NSW have come with dramatically improved community attitudes and we not only welcome but applaud a contingent of the definition of discipline, NSW Police Service marching in scarlet the annual parade, we need to resist attempts to whitewash our history and we need to definition in literature make sure we do not lose the memories of our earlier struggles. A police officer dances in the 2015 Mardi Gras parade. Jason Reed/Reuters. The motion at Sydney Town Hall earlier in 2015, calling for an official apology to the 78ers for scarlet motif, the violence of that June night in analysis 1978, was strongly supported by scarlet motif out-lesbian elder and Deputy Lord Mayor Robyn Kemmis, who recently died. We owe a debt to her work and that of people such as Steve Warren, one of the original 78ers who has worked tirelessly for an apology. That Sydney City Council action has prompted a small bipartisan group of NSW State parliamentarians to take up the call for an official apology.

Sadly, any apology now is too late for so many who were present at that first Mardi Gras and are no longer with us. Many were cut down before their time in the HIV AIDS epidemic. The efforts of these NSW parliamentarians, though, are important and mean a great deal to the 78ers that survive. Back in 1978 we called, in vain, for a Royal Commission into the police violence of claim definition in literature that June night. We also called for an apology from Fairfax for publishing the names, occupations and addresses of all of the 53 people who were arrested that night. Till this time no formal apology has been received from Fairfax. Scarlet Motif? After nearly 38 years since the first Mardi Gras an apology by of discipline the NSW State parliament would help to heal the motif, wounds. So as an original 78er I welcome an apology by the NSW Parliament. But it needs to anne hathaway what be a “living apology”. A living apology is one where Parliament affirms the need for ongoing vigilance so that the human rights of LGBTIQ people are respected and protected in law. It also has to affirm the need for ongoing social investment in educational programs that create a more inclusive NSW community where differences are respected and where the letter, power of diversity is celebrated.

We welcome anyone who participated in the 1978 Mardi Gras with an definition interest in the apology to contact the 78ers committee or the scarlet, Pride History Group. If you are in Sydney for the Fair Day in Victoria Park on Sunday February 21, come our tent and in literature, talk to us. In the current international climate with the re-emergence of motif fascist threats from all sides there are too few places in the world that offer the hope of this kind of open society. Sydney, and Australia more broadly, could represent this kind of inclusive society. Definition Of Discipline? It will be a society where the role of the police shifts from motif, suppressing the definition, rights of minorities to protecting and even championing them.
